It was the middle of Christmas break and Ed sat by himself in the school library. He had decided to take advantage of it while it was quieter and emptier than usual. The Tome he consulted for transfiguration fun was a great boon yet it lacked anything involving potions. He had picked out a few book on advanced potion making and piled them up around his seat.
The hours ticked by as he took notes and committed certain recipes to memory. The young Ravenclaw was lost in his own little world. It was around midday when someone snapped him out of it.
“I like your shoes,” said a quiet voice.
Ed jumped ever so slightly in surprise and glanced around. Apparently a Slytherin boy had sat down beside at some point and he completely missed it.
“Huh?” Ed blurted out.
“Your shoes,” said the Slytherin. He nodded down toward Ed's feet. “I like them a lot.”
Ed looked down at his feet as well. They were clad in a brand new pair of trainers. They were a royal blue with silver laces, accents and soles. The Ravenclaw colors. They even had the House symbol on the side.
“Oh,” Ed said with a smile. He pulled his feet out from under the table to better show them off. “Yeah they are pretty cool.”
“Where'd you get em?” asked the Hufflepuff. He eyed the shoes enviously.
“Oh uh,” Ed said. “They were a gift from my dad actually. He's a muggle. Works for a shoe company. I guess he was able to customize a pair just for me.”
Ed wiggled his toes happily against the inside of his shoes. Confident in his mostly true cover story.
“That's so cool,” breathed the Slytherin. His eyes wide in wonder.
The Slytherin boy stared at Ed, then back down to his shoes. Seemingly entranced by them. It suddenly felt a lot quieter than Ed would've liked.
“So uh,” Ed said awkwardly. “My name's Ed.”
“Oh!” said the Slytherin. He blushed slightly as he pulled his gaze away from Ed's shoes. “I'm sorry. My name's Oliver.”
Oliver the Slytherin held his hand out and smiled. Ed smiled in return and shook the boy's hand as naturally as he could manage.
“Nice to meet you Ed,” said Oliver.
“Nice to meet you too Oli,” Ed chuckled nervously. He wasn't used to meeting other kids so formally.
“I'm really sorry about staring,” Oliver said. “I just really like footwear I guess. And yours are especially cool.”
“Its alright,” Ed said. He tapped his shoes together a couple times. “I'm kinda glad someone noticed them actually. They're pretty special to me.”
“I would think so,” Oliver laughed. “I'd do anything to get a pair like that.”
The Slytherin stared down longingly at Ed's shoes again. With Oliver distracted again Ed finally got a good look of him.
Oliver looked to be around Ed and Will's age, if a bit shorter. He had short black hair that slightly stuck out at the sides. His eyes were brown and he wore a pair of horn rimmed glasses. His face was slightly round and maintained a youthful, boyish charm. His robes were new and accented with the traditional Slytherin green. Ed saw that he too wore a fancy pair of shoes. They were gold with white laces and soles.
“You've got a pretty cool pair of kicks too you know,” Ed pointed out.
“You think so?” Oliver asked. He pulled his feet out to better show off his shoes as well. “I think they're great but I don't like wearing them too often. I'm only wearing them now because most everyone is away on holiday.I don't usually wear them because I'm afraid people might make fun of me...”
Oliver frowned and moved his shoes back under the table.
“Aww that's no fun,” Ed said. “You should be able to go out wearing whatever you want without worrying about what people say.”
“Yeah I know,” Oliver sighed. “But if anyone teased me about them, or ruined them or something I dunno what I'd do.”
“Hey,” Ed said in a suddenly serious tone. He leaned in close to the Slytherin who moved in closer as well. “Tell ya what. When break is over I want you to try wearing them like normal. And if anyone gives you trouble you come tell me and I'll turn them into something weird.”
“R-really?” Oliver whispered. “You'd do that for me?”
“Sure,” Ed grinned. “I'm one of the best when it comes to transfiguration. So is my best friend Will. You can go to him too.”
“Will?” Oliver asked. “You mean Will from second year.”
“Yeah, he's a Slytherin too,” Ed said. “Do you know him at all?”
“Not really,” Oliver shook his head. “I always thought it'd be weird for a first year to talk to an upperclassman...”
“A firsty eh?” Ed grinned again. “I guess that explains why I've never seen you around. I'm a second year like Will.”
“And you don't think it's weird for us to like...” Oliver said quietly. “Be friends?”
“No way man!” Ed said as he slapped the first year playfully on the back. “The way I see it is so long as you get along well, you shouldn't worry about who's in what grade. Heck, I know a pretty cool seventh year actually.”
“Woah,” Oliver said, clearly impressed.
“Yup,” Ed said. He suddenly caught the time on one of the libraries clocks out of the corner of his eyes. It was getting to be the afternoon now. “Hey so, I gotta get going. Gonna go meet Will.”
“Ok,” Oliver said, trying not to sound too disappointed.
“You wanna meet up here tomorrow? Same time as today?” Ed asked as he gathered up the books he wanted to check out.
“Definitely!” Oliver said, his face beaming.
“I'll introduce you to Will,” Ed said. Then he leaned in close to grin that trademark grin of his. “And maybe I'll even let you try these bad boys on.”
Ed motioned down toward his shoes. Oliver's eyes grew wide as he blushed.
“Y-you'd let me try them on?” said the Slytherin in disbelief.
“Sure,” Ed nodded. “Maybe I'd even let you borrow them for a bit. At least until I can hook you up with your own pair.”
Oliver's eyes grew even wider.
“Oh gosh,” Oliver gasped. “That would be so awesome.”
“I'll talk to Will and see if he can make another custom order,” Ed said with a wink.
“Will?” Oliver asked. “I thought you said your dad had them custom made.”
Ed froze. His heart skipped a beat and his mind raced. Had he really let that slip just now?
“Oh uh,” Ed said, his mind in a panic as it tried to think of a cover. “My dad's name is Will too actually. Weird right?” Ed laughed nervously.
“You call your dad by his first name?” Oliver asked, growing ever more curious.
“Heh yeah,” Ed said. “That's kinda just how my family's always been. My dad uses his dad's first name too.”
“Huh,” Oliver said. “That is kinda weird. But kinda cool too. Being able to call your dad by his actual name.”
“Yup,” Ed said, breathing an inward sigh of relief. He gathered up the last book and quickly turned to leave. “I'll see you tomorrow ok Oli?”
Ed waved goodbye, hastily checked out his books and left.
Ed was out of breath by the time he was finally back in the Room of Requirement. With the door shut safely behind him he doubled over and gasped for air, clutching a stitch in his side.
After catching his breath Ed made his way over to a desk that had manifested this time around. He dumped all the potion text books on top of it and sat down in a comfy reading chair.
“Ahhh...” Ed sighed as he relaxed into the velvety cushioning. “Those staircases sure can be hell on your feet.”
The Ravenclaw stared absentmindedly at his shoes. As comfy as they were, they were starting to make his feet a bit warm. He bent down to unlace them and pulled them both off, revealing his lack of socks.
“Much better,” Ed breathed as he wiggled his bare toes in the cool air. After airing his feet out for a bit, Ed got up and carried the shoes over to the main work table. He set them atop it and pulled out his wand.
“Please don't me too mad at me Will,” Ed said quietly. He flicked his wand and pointed it toward the shoes. They were enveloped in a quick flash of blue light and quickly began to grow. As they grew they drew in closely together to meld into a single larger shoe. Then it kept on growing until it began to take on a more human shape. Before long the transformation was complete, and Will was back to his usual naked self.
“Hey buddy,” Ed laughed. He watched as his friend slowly sat up and shook his head. “How're you doin?”
“Fine I guess,” Will grumbled. “I'm more used to being untransfigured then I was at the start.”
“Did you have fun though?” Ed asked with a grin.
Will blushed but frowned at his friend anyway.
“I wouldn't be submitting myself to this if I wasn't having fun,” Will pouted. He crossed his arms and suddenly cried out in disgust.
“Ugh!” Will said as he shook his hands. “Why am I all sweaty?!”
“Heh, yeah,” Ed laughed. “I MAY have kept you on longer than we initially planned.”
“Edward!” Will cried. He angrily grabbed for his friend. Ed dodged in time, resulting in Will toppling onto the floor. Ed burst out laughing.
“Oh!” Ed said suddenly. “Before I forget...”
“Forget what?” Will grumbled, rubbing the elbow he landed on.
“I met a cute Slytherin kid in the library earlier,” Ed said as he made his way back over to the desk. “His name's Oliver.”
“Oliver?” Will parroted. “Oliver Yunker?”
“I guess so,” Ed shrugged. “He didn't share his last name. He's pretty cool though. He was pretty enamored with you.”
Will blushed as his eyebrows went up in surprise.
“As a pair of shoes I mean,” Ed chuckled.
“Oh,” said Will as his eyebrows came back down. “I was about to say...”
“Yeah, pretty sure he's got like a low key shoe fetish or something,” Ed said pretty casually. “That's why I wanna bring him in and get him involved.”
“Woah woah woah,” Will said as he slipped into a pair of his emerald briefs. “You want to get someone else involved?!”
“Yeah sure,” Ed nodded. He opened up one of the books he picked out. “Why not?”
“Um, I can think of plenty of reasons why not!” Will said, throwing his arms up. “He could snitch on us!”
“Well we could always turn him into something,” Ed said. “And just not, turn him back you know?”
“I mean,” Will crossed his arms. “I SUPPOSE. I would like to avoid having to permanently transfigure someone.”
“Apart from you though right?” Ed said, shooting his friend a knowing grin.
Will blushed harder and scowled at the Ravenclaw.
“Fine, bring him in if you want,” Will said. He sat down in a spare chair in a huff. “Just don't blame me if something goes horribly wrong and you get yourself expelled.”
The young friends sat in silence for several minutes. The only sound came from the pages from Ed's potion textbooks as he flipped them.
“So,” Will said as he pulled his chair over. “What did you check out?”
“Some books on advanced potion making,” Ed said. “There's something I wanna try but the Tome didn't have everything I wanted.”
“What did you want to try?” Will asked.
“Its a surprise,” Ed said as he turned to wink at his friend. He noticed Will had put his underwear back on. “What'd you put those on for?”
“I didn't really feel like being completely naked?” Will said.
“I'm not quite done with you though,” Ed gave his wand another flick and Will's briefs came tearing away from his body.
“Aww c'mon,” Will whined.
“Quit yer whining,” Ed said. He gave his wand another flick and Will hovered up and out of his chair. He crossed his arms and legs in a huff as he floated in place. “You know you love it.”
“Yeah yeah...” Will grumbled. He rolled his eyes as he blushed.
Ed gave his wand one more flick and Will's body was made to straighten out before taking on a white hue. It seemed to grow somewhat in height as it hardened into marble. When the spell was finished, Ed had a beautiful marble statue of a slightly older looking Will. Complete with a tasteful leaf censor. He gently st it down beside the desk.
“You make a better muse a statue,” Ed explained with a chuckle.
The Ravenclaw second year got up to rummage through the cupboards for potion ingredients. The statue of his friend looking on with unblinking eyes....
